Skincare for the menopause is a conversation that has started but for most women, it’s not talked about enough, the hormonal changes that will affect their skin through this change.

The effects of hormonal changes on the skin in the teenage years are well documented, there is an entire segment of beauty pretty much dedicated to oily teen skin and breakouts.

Less catered for is the effects of hormones on the skin due to menopause and all the changes that can occur.

The end of a woman’s fertility can bring about numerous changes which vary from one woman to another in severity.

But for the most common complaints at this transition, there are skin solutions that can ease the passage of this turbulent time.

According to the International Dermal Institute, the slowing of oestrogen production in the body can lead to the following; drier and thinning skin, sagging, hot flashes, slow cell turnover, and dark spots.

While there isn’t an entire category of beauty for menopause, there are certain products in different brands that will alleviate these issues and offer relief, plus better skin that is radiant and healthy-looking. These are the beauty pieces that work with each concern.

Dryness and overnight hot flashes. Two things are happening here, drier skin lacks fats and oil, hot flashes cause moisture loss, so both oil and water are required for better skin in the morning.

Hot flashes can be shortened by spritzing the skin, try a tin of Thermal Water (Vichy, Evian, Uriage, Avene, La Roche-Posay), all are inexpensive. Keep in the fridge and spritz when a flush occurs to shorten it instantly.

Instead of layering on lots of products before bed, choose a product that does it all, a night balm. For dry, mature skin with moisture loss Decleor’s Neroli Hydrating Night Balm, €42.99. The 100% natural balm with avocado and hazelnut oils, Shea butter, Neroli (orange blossom), Chamomile and Basil balm melts on skin contact for replenished skin come morning.

Oestrogen plays a part in melanin production, when it slows down skin can be more sun-sensitive, and dark spots from earlier damage can become more noticeable according to the Institute. Daily protection is an obvious must for the face, hands, and chest, or anywhere else exposed.
