It was confirmed on Tuesday evening that a second case of coronavirus aka COVID-19 has been discovered in the country.

The female patient is said to be based in the east of Ireland and recently travelled from northern Italy.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan confirmed the positive test result and indicated that the Department of Health had been notified.

Dr Holohan indicated that those getting tested for COVID-19/coronavirus only have to wait four to five hours for their test results to be complete and almost 400 people have been tested so far.

As both patients recently returned from northern Italy, the Department of Foreign Affairs updated their travel recommendations to the area.

They are now advising people against all but essential travel between Ireland and the four main provinces of northern Italy.

This includes Lombardy, Veneto, Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna.
