Watch: Black Widow trailer kicks off Marvel's Phase Four

Marvel has officially kicked off Phase Four of the Cinematic Universe with the first trailer for Black Widow.

Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as the Russian agent aka Natasha Romanoff in her own solo movie that co-stars Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz.

Fans of Black Widow were devastated when she met a tragic end during Avengers: Endgame however she's back for a solo film set years before.

Following the events of Captain America: Civil War, Natasha can be seen on the run from Secretary Ross (William Hurt), until she is faced with a blast from her past: “sis” Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh).

The women seem to have a complicated relationship to say the least as they violently grapple with each other and it becomes clear that Belova was raised in the same Black Widow programme as Romanoff.

But that’s not all, as it seems the programme is back with a vengeance, prompting them both to reunite with two other old faces, one of which is Red Guardian/Alexei Shostakov played by Stranger Things star David Harbour.

Meanwhile, Oscar winner Rachel Weisz plays another figure of the programme, Melina, who comments on Harbour’s character getting “fat”.

The trailer shows Natasha take on what seems to be an army of new Widows and mysterious masked villain, Taskmaster and it looks set to be an emotional swan song for Johansson’s heroine, as the story of Natasha Romanoff comes full circle.

Marvel fans were quick to show their support for the new film on Twitter, one wrote: "I missed getting hype for these teaser trailers so it’s good to be back y’all."

Another said: "This film is giving me Captain America the winter soldier vibes!!! Epic stuff is definitely on the way!!"

"Thank you so much Marvel, thank you," added a third.

Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland and is the first a number of Marvel films we can expect next year.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige spoke at the San Diego Comic-Con and D23 Expo over the summer to reveal more details about the next phase of the MCU and announced we can also expect The Eternals film in November 2020 as well as Disney+ TV series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier next fall.

Black Widow will be released in UK cinemas on May 1, 2020.
