The brave officers were targeted as they investigated reports of a man with a weapon in Cranogue Road, Ballymun, North Dublin.

They grabbed the gunman before he could set off a grenade. A source said last night: “It is an absolute miracle that no bystanders or gardai were killed.

“The suspect had been trying to get his hands on a machine gun for some time now.

“After taking cocaine, he went walkabout with his new gun, spraying bullets at anything well before gardai arrived.

“The four gardai who chased him were very brave and are extremely lucky to be alive as the suspect continued to fire as he went into the house.

“Only for the quick reactions of the gardai, all four could have been killed. He had intended to detonate the grenade and God knows how many would have been killed if he did.

“Senior gardai are very thankful tonight that they don’t have a bloodbath on their hands.”

The man had allegedly been seen by gardai walking around with the firearm and then took shots at the unarmed officers before fleeing into a house. He was then chased into the property.

It is understood a grenade and machine-gun were recovered. The suspect, who is being held in Ballymun Garda station, is believed to be a well-known criminal and part of a family involved in an ongoing feud.

A Garda spokesman said: “At approximately 4.45pm this afternoon gardai were called to a report of a male armed with a firearm in the Poppintree area of Ballymun.

“Garda Armed Support Units and local units were dispatched to the scene. A male in his 30s was arrested shortly afterwards by unarmed gardai and a firearm recovered at a house on Cranogue Road, Ballymun.

“He was conveyed to Ballymun Garda station where he is currently detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

“The area around the house was sealed off due to the discovery of a device in the house and the Defence Forces EOD team are currently at the scene.”

Commissioner Drew Harris said: “The gardai involved showed great bravery in ensuring the safety of the public.”
