Alex Jones broke down in tears on The One Show after being surprised by her mum live on air.

The One Show presenter, 43, hasn't been able to see her mum since lockdown began and hasn't taken a single day off.

She hosted the show alongside Alex Scott today, who was reading messages from viewers off her iPad.

The Strictly 2019 star read: "A message from Mary now who's from somewhere near Swansea who says she can't wait to see her daughter, who she says she hasn't seen in 16 weeks."

Alex Jones pressed a hand to her chest as Alex Scott continued: "In fact, she can't wait any longer and here she is, actually."

"Oh no!" Alex gasped as her mum's face was shown on screen. "Oh mum!"

Alex sounded emotional as she hid her mouth with her hands: "Hiya mum! It's only going to be - how many days now? Five?"

Her mum Mary was close to tears as she replied that it had been "five very long months".

Mary wiped away some tears as Alex struggled to look at the screen again, saying: "This is the first time I've seen her get quite emotional."

Alex Scott confirmed that Alex Jones would be going away for two weeks to be with her family for the first time in months.

"It's been a real privilege to come to work every day with you lot," Alex replied as her voice wobbled. "And thanks, as well as my family, for getting me through this really weird time.

"It's been a real honour to do this job."
