Conor McGregor has said that he had an armed guard present at his children's school in the US over fears of a mass shooting.

Six people including three children were shot and killed at a school in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday evening -- before the shooter was shot dead by police some 13 minutes later. It was the 149th mass shooting -- four or more people excluding the shooter -- to occur in the country this year.

McGregor, who's set to fight for the first time in two years when he faces Michael Chandler in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter, called for all teachers in the US to be armed. He added the guard would have shot the Nashville school shooter had it occurred in his children's school.

'Just got an "Amber alert" to my phone while here in Orlando,' McGregor wrote in a now deleted tweet. 'A smart and quick set up that alerts everyone there is a child missing and with full description and detail also. Very smart. I would like to see armed protection at each school also.

'I have had my children at school here while stateside and have had my own armed guard present at the school. This was prior to the most recent school shooting also.

'If she shot her way in to that school from the outside, my guard, who is tucked away, armed and unseen, would have seen her and taken her down. Saving those children’s lives,' he added. 'May God and his best people on this earth protect our children!'

McGregor added that he would like to see all teachers armed in schools, and said that in a situation similar to the Nashville school shooting the shooter would be shot dead before entering the school. McGregor has three children with his fiancée Dee Devlin -- Conor Junior, Croia, and their youngest, Rian.

McGregor recently made his return to the UFC earlier this month -- albeit not as a fighter, as he was there to film a scene with Jake Gylenhaal at the UFC 285 weigh-in for the upcoming film, Road House.

The film, which will also star the former UFC Champion, is a remake of the Patrick Swayze hit, and the film's stars staged a weigh-in for a fight between Gylenhaal's character, former UFC fighter Elwood Dalton, and his opponent, former UFC Jay Heiron.

The pair stared each other down following the actual weigh-ins for UFC 285, while McGregor told the crowd 'Las Vegas! Who's ready for tomorrow night? We've got the biggest fight in Road House history, Harris versus Dalton UFC 222.

'Everyone in this arena, you're about to be part of my movie that's coming out with myself and Jake Gyllenhaal. A Joe Silver production, make sure to cheer for the weigh-ins and let's go Las Vegas.'
