Ireland fans can breathe a sigh of relief as RTE have secured the rights to show the Boys in Green’s crucial Euro play-off with Slovakia.

Doubts emerged in recent weeks about whether the game would be shown on national TV.

The play-off games are considered Nations League matches instead of European qualifiers, which Sky Sports own the rights to.

However, RTE confirmed today they will broadcast the game, which kicks off at 7.45pm on Thursday, March 26.

Mick McCarthy’s men face Slovakia, with the winner progressing to the play-off final which takes place five days later, which RTE will also broadcast.

Ireland will face either Northern Ireland or Bosnia if they progress, for a place at the Euros.

All of this planning may prove fruitless as fears the coronavirus could scupper Ireland’s semi-final persist.

UEFA distanced themselves from the matter, insisting governments and health organisations will decide if the tournament goes ahead.

Mick McCarthy won’t be at the helm should Ireland qualify but he will receive a handsome payoff to step aside.
