A Premier League club has decided to ban any and all autographs and selfies with fans in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The virus has rapidly spread around Europe and has wrecked havoc on the sporting calendar, having already cancelled one of Ireland’s Six Nations matches and halting a number of Serie A matches in Italy.

Ireland’s trip to Bratislava for their upcoming Euro 2020 play-off with Slovakia remains in doubt, but at least Ireland defender Matt Doherty should be free of the virus.

In a statement from his club Wolves, the Midlands outfit have decided to stop their players signing autographs from fans in order to minimise contact.

‘The club is now taking positive steps to reduce the risk of its community’s health by limiting public engagements for its employees,’ they said.

‘Wolves players and staff have been asked to avoid any unnecessary meetings, lunches or other public engagements, and temporarily avoid casual fan interaction such as selfies or autographs.’

‘Whilst we acknowledge that this will be disappointing for some supporters, we stress that this a temporary measure to protect the ongoing well-being of the Wolves squad and is a decision which has not been taken lightly’, the club continued.

‘In addition, Wolves players and staff are also being instructed to avoid shaking hands where a warm smile and personal greeting will suffice.’

You can see why the club are cautious, considering their hopes of a Champions League place were greatly boosted by beating Tottenham 3-2 on Sunday.
