Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker revamped the iconic Batman villain’s image as a caricature by adding depth to his character.

The movie grossed over $1 billion and also won him an Oscar for best actor in a leading role.

Since its release in 2019, fans have been waiting for a sequel to Joker. Though the makers initially insisted that Joker was a standalone, its second instalment was recently announced and netizens just can’t seem to keep calm out of excitement.

Here’s everything you need to know about Joker 2 which is set to hit screens on 4th October 2024:

1. Lady Gaga Is In The Film

Lady Gaga is reportedly playing Joker’s love interest, Harley Quinn in the movie’s second instalment. The movie’s teaser announced Gaga’s involvement in the project titled Joker: Folie à Deux which roughly translates to ‘a madness shared by two’.

According to the comics, Harley Quinn was Joker’s psychotherapist who fell in love with him while treating him at the Arkham Asylum.

2. We’ll Get To See A Lot More Of Gotham’s Psychiatric Facility

Joker ended with Joaquin Phoenix escaping from Arkham Asylum and joining a violent riot on the streets of Gotham.

If the sequel includes Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, it is reported that the asylum will feature in a lot of scenes to explore the relationship between these two characters. The psychiatric facility first appeared in the Batman comics in 1974.

3. It Is Rumoured To Be A Musical

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joker 2 will be a musical.

The claim isn’t far-fetched as Joker’s producer, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga starred in A Star Is Born, which also had the same director as Joker, Todd Philips. They have all the ammunition to make a great musical.

4. A Joker Multiverse?

In an interview for the movie’s BTS video, Bradley Cooper shared how Todd Philips came up with the movie’s idea and told him, “I have this crazy idea for this altered version of DC, and the first one is the origin story of the Joker.” This opens up possibilities for a slew of movies that can ultimately lead to a multiverse plotline.

Moreover, Gaga’s casting as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux deviates from the original casting of Margot Robbie as Joker’s sidekick. Fans are speculating that this hints at an alternate DC universe.

With this, Joaquin Phoenix will join the ranks of some of Hollywood's highest-paid celebrities like Tom Cruise, Chris Hemsworth and Vin Diesel.
