New Delhi: There are many fans of dairy – from milk to curd to butter to cheese and desi ghee (clarified butter) and so on. Dairy products are rich sources of calcium, proteins, healthy fats, vitamin D – every nutrient that contributes to bone health and strong teeth along with optimum organ function. Apart from people who are lactose intolerant or vegan by choice, milk products are a go-to for bone-related conditions and overall health – and since childhood, mothers give their children a tall glass of milk twice as day for the same reasons. And now, a study associates specific milk products with a lower risk of type-2 diabetes – one of the most common chronic lifestyle disorders.

On the nutrition front, one cup of milk has the following to offer:

  1. 122 calories
  2. 8 grams protein
  3. 307 grams calcium
  4. 12 grams carbohydrates
  5. 12 grams sugar
  6. 95mg sodium
  7. 4.6 grams fat

The best milk products to dodge diabetes risk

In a study published in Diabetes Care, experts carried out a review of the data on the association between diabetes and animal foods like eggs, dairy, fish and meat. Experts discovered that the best dairy products to prevent diabetes are:

  1. Yogurt
  2. Milk
  3. Low-fat dairy

Experts discovered that although meat was linked with an increased risk of type-2 diabetes, some dairy products were linked with a lower risk of the diseases. For example, 200 grams of milk can mitigate diabetes risk by 10 per cent – total dairy can lower the odds by 5 per cent and low-fat dairy by 3 per cent. Yogurt can fight diabetes risk by 6 per cent – however, full-fat dairy and cheese did not have a positive effect on the body.
