Along with toning and moisturising, cleansing is a key part of any daily skincare regime.

But have you ever considered exactly when and why you should be washing your face? According to dermatologist Dr. Mary Sommerlad, all of these factors can make a difference when it comes to caring for your complexion.

Cleanse each morning

Even though skincare experts emphasise the importance of cleansing at the end of the day, it’s also a good idea to get into the routine of washing your face each morning too.

“While you may have removed your make-up the night before, anything from late-night phone calls to your pillowcase could cause dirt to have built up on your face while you slept,” she said. “In the morning, you should gently cleanse the skin to remove any traces of active ingredients such as a retinoid or glycolic acid as well. Your morning skincare process is about protecting the skin from what you’re doing that day.”

Use the right product

As everybody has a unique skin type, the cleanser that works well for others simply might not be suitable for you.

“Those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin types can use your daily cream or ointment-based moisturiser as your in-shower cleanser - it cleans the skin as it traps any surface dirt but does not dry it out,” noted Dr. Sommerlad, recommending Cetraben Daily Cleansing Cream as it will preserve the skin barrier and rehydrate.

Elsewhere, cream cleansers are usually better for dry or dehydrated complexions and gel versions can be useful for those with oily skin types. Some other great options to check out include Philosophy’s Purity One-Step Facial Cleanser, Oskia’s Renaissance Cleansing Gel, and Scientia’s Peachy Clean Milky Oil Cleanser.

Get your beauty sleep

Before you hit the hay each night, it’s key to remove your make-up and cleanse your face.

And don’t even think about simply using a face wipe – they can be abrasive and cause the complexion to dry out.

“Evening is the most crucial time in our skincare routine. The best nighttime routine to follow is to gently cleanse your face, apply an active ingredient serum, followed by a gentle comforting moisturiser,” added Dr. Sommerlad.
