Everyone has dreamed that they died in a dream at least once. Regardless of the cause of your dream death, the general idea of dreams about dying is one of the most common nightmares people have.

Oddly enough, it’s also one of the most perplexing scenarios out there. Like, why would your brain think giving you that nightmare is a good idea? What does it mean when you die in your dream?

Believe it or not, this could mean a bunch of different things — all depending on who you ask. Ever wonder what it all means? Here’s what dying in your dream means from a variety of different perspectives.

Superstition-wise, it’s actually a good thing to dream about your own death.

Though dreaming of yourself dying is pretty ominous, many cultures believe that randomly dreaming of your death could be a sign that your death has died. In other words, it could be a sign that your fate changed for the better and that you’ll live a longer life.

Dreaming of others dying, on the other hand, could be a sign that the people around you will be undergoing a drastic change of some sort. Most of the time, it’s a good change in wealth or longevity. In certain cultures, dreaming of a female friend or family member dying can also suggest a pregnancy.

If it’s a recurring dream or a dream that seems a bit too real, some might tell you that it’s a premonition. However, it’s worth pointing out that the vast majority of dreams of people dying will not be premonitions. Otherwise, people would be dropping dead left and right. So, don’t start freaking out, okay?

Now, let’s look at some of the more psychology-based interpretations.

Death is a heavy subject, and it’s one that can take a lot of forms. For many people, death shows itself as a major loss. When we say something inside us died, we mean that it’s gone for good, and it’s rarely ever meant in a good way. As a result, a lot of the psychological interpretations involving with dreams about dying often will reflect this.

In many cases, having a nightmare about a spouse, friend, or child dying can mean that you are afraid of losing them. It can also suggest that you may be harboring anxiety about the way that they are changing, suggesting that you want them to remain the way they were when you first met them.

With some people, dreaming of their deaths could be your mind’s way of addressing the anxiety you feel about losing a quality they possess. Do you feel like you are losing yourself? That could be a cause, too. If you are dreaming of yourself dying, it could be that you’re anxious or nervous about the way your life is changing, and that you may feel powerless to stop it.

But there are also rage-related reasons why you might dream of dying, too.

At times, dreams of people dying can also suggest underlying anger or disappointment in some aspect of your life. It’s not unheard of, for example, for people who were victims of abuse to have dreams of their abusers dying pretty gruesome deaths.

This is particularly probable if you are dreaming of people other than you dying a violent death. If you have been feeling a lot of rage or jealousy towards the person, this could be your brain’s way of handling those feelings. It’s your brain’s way of saying, “You’re dead to me!”

In some cases, dreaming of yourself dying could also be your brain’s way of giving you a metaphor for the way people abused you. People who are mistreated by others often will have dreams of themselves dying as a result of feeling useless or emotionally destroyed.

Above all, most dream interpreters tend to see death dreams as a sign of confronting change.

The only thing that remains constant in life is change — and that might be why dreaming of dying is so darned common. Dying often represents a very final end and a brand new beginning. If you have recently undergone drastic changes in your life, then this is the most likely reason why you’re dreaming of dying.

The best way to figure out what your dream means is to take a look at your life to get a clue about what it could be. Death dreams often come as a result of having some tumultuous events in your life, or due to anxieties that could be causing you emotional distress.

Each dream is different, so if none of these explanations make sense to you, it’s worth trying to figure out what the dream’s symbolism means to you. Or, you know, it could just be a nightmare because you’re afraid of death.
