The second wave of the pandemic has wreaked havoc on people, resulting in financial hardships. In these stressful times, it is extremely important for people to keep a tab on their finances and their sources of income to tackle any emergency situation.

In what could be termed as a relief for Employee Provident Fund (EPF) account holders, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) now allows them to check their PF balance. PF account holders can access all the information related to their provident fund online, via SMS service or by simply giving a missed call.

If an exempted establishment manages your EPF, then the employee must contact the employer to check the provident fund balance.

How to check EPF balance online?

For checking the PF balance, an employee can use Umang App, a government app that provides access to various schemes in one place. One can check the PF balance using an online medium by following these simple steps:

Step 1: PF account holders need to log in to EPFO's member passbook portal using their Universal Account Number (UAN). You can use the link to access the member passbook www.epfindia.gov.in

Step 2: If you have a UAN number, then click on the 'For Employee' option under 'Our Services'. Then select 'Member Passbook' and then enter your UAN and password.

Step 3: In case you do not have a UAN, then you can go to the Member e-Sewa portal and click on the 'Know your UAN' link. The link is available at the bottom of the login page. Member e-Sewa portal can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

Step 3: Your UAN can be activated by following the 'Activate UAN' link which is present just below the 'Know Your UAN' link.

Step 4: You can go directly to the EPF passbook portal. You can also access the same link using the Member-e Sewa portal.

Step 5: You will be asked to enter UAN and password on the passbook portal.

Step 6: After entering UAN and password, just click on 'Download/View password' and then your passbook will appear on the screen. One can also download or print the EPF passbook from the website.

One can also go directly to the page https://passbook.epfindia.gov.in/MemberPassBook/Login.jsp to check their provident fund balance.

How to check EPF balance using an SMS facility?

You can check your EPF balance using the SMS facility if your UAN is registered with the EPFO. PF account holders need to send 'EPFOHO UAN ENG' message to 7738299899. Make sure not to include quotation marks in the SMS.

It must be noted that ENG here indicates the initials of the preferred language. In case you want to know the details of your PF balance in Marathi, then type EPFOHO UAN MAR. UAN must be seeded with a bank account, Aadhaar and PAN to check the PF balance.

The SMS facility is available in multiple languages, and it must be sent from the registered mobile number of UAN.

How to check EPF balance via missed call?

EPF users can also give a missed call on 011-22901406 from the registered mobile number if they are registered on the UAN portal. But one must make sure that the UAN is seeded with the bank account number, Aadhaar and PAN to avail of the facility and the call service is free of cost.
