Gloucestershire Town Hosts Crazy Contraptions For Tetbury Wacky Races
The Gloucestershire town of Tetbury was taken over by all kinds of crazy contraptions on the Mayday Bank Holiday. During the event contestants took their soapbox derby style creations down a specially constructed downhill run down The Chipping to Millennium Green in the picturesque Cotswolds town - a course complete with its own hairpin bend. The Avon Atom, piloted by George Marshall, won the event - which consisted of qualifying and then two official runs. He beat 22 other competitors. This year's race was the first for three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was first run in 2012 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The latest event, which comes ahead of her Platinum celebration was attended by 7,000 people in total, also had a charitable purpose, raising £7,000 for dementia charities and aid to Ukraine.
