PV Sindhu, on Sunday, July 17, won the 2022 edition of the Singapore Open after beating Wang Zhi Yi from China in the women's singles final.

Sindhu showed nerves of steel and beat Wang, also the current Asian Championships gold medallist, 21-9 11-21 21-15.

The victory is expected to keep Sindhu in good stead ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which starts in less than a fortnight.

Sindhu started the game on an impressive note, not allowing the 22-year-old Wang any sort of breathing space. However, Wang didn't give up the ghost and gave Sindhu the taste of her own medicine in the second game.

With the match set for a close finish, Sindhu kept her composure to come up trumps. It was Sindhu's third title this season after she won the two Super 300 crowns in Syed Modi International and the Swiss Open.

The 27-year-old Sindhu also has two back-to-back Olympic medals to her name. For the time being, it remains to be seen how she performs in the Commonwealth Games.

In the meantime, the fans heaped praise on the Indian star for going all the way and winning the title in Singapore. Former Indian cricketers Rahul Sharma and VVS Laxman also shared their appreciation for Sindhu. Laxman called her an inspiration for budding badminton players in the country.

Laxman took to Twitter and wrote, "Congratulations to @Pvsindhu1 on winning the #SingaporeOpen You are a true inspiration to young sports enthusiasts of our country. Keep it up #Champion #RoleModel."
