What is Anocovax Vaccine? What is Anocovax Vaccine?

As incidences of Covid-19 spread across India, it now has its first Covid-19 vaccine to protect animals from illness. Anocovax, a homegrown vaccine developed by the ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines (NRC) in Haryana, was launched by Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

WHAT IS ANOCOVAX?

Anocovax is a SARS-CoV-2 Delta (Covid-19) vaccine for animals that is inactivated. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the country's main agri-research agency that falls under the Union Agriculture Ministry said in a statement that the immunity produced by Anocovax neutralises both Delta and Omicron versions of SARS-CoV-2.

Dogs, lions, leopards, mice, and bunnies are all safe to receive the vaccine.

ANIMAL POSITIVITY RATE IN INDIA:

Eight Asiatic lions in a zoo in Hyderabad acquired coronavirus in May 2021. They appeared to be suffering from respiratory problems.

According to a study titled "Surveillance and molecular characterization of SARS-CoV-2 in non-human hosts in Gujarat," the virus was detected in dogs, cows, and buffaloes in Gujarat.

Two lions died of the virus in a zoo near Chennai in June 2021. Coughing and a decrease in appetite were among the signs displayed by the animals. At the zoo, at least ten other lions contracted the illness, with two elderly lionesses becoming dangerously ill before recovering.

Infections have been found in tigers, lions, mink, snow leopards, cougars, ferrets, dogs, and domestic cats all over the world.

Eight gorillas at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park became the world's first great apes to test positive for the new coronavirus in January 2021.

Three snow leopards died of Covid-19 in a children's zoo in Nebraska in November 2021. The leopards and two Sumatran tigers at the zoo were being treated for the infection. The tigers, according to the zoo, have made a full recovery.

HOW DO ANIMALS GET INFECTIONS?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Covid-19 can be spread from people to animals through close contact. It is quite unlikely that it will spread from animals to people.
