In view of the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Central government today extended the validity of important vehicle documents, including driving licences (DLs) and registration certificates (RCs), till September 30, 2021.

In an advisory, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said that the extension has been provided to the documents pertaining to Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. Among the documents are DLs, RCs, fitness certificates and all kinds of permits.

The extension is only for the documents whose validity has expired since February 1, 2020, or would lapse by September 30, 2021. MoRTH has advised the enforcement authorities to treat such documents as valid till September 30, 2021.

"Taking into consideration the need to prevent the spread of Covid-19, MoRTH has advised the enforcement authorities that the validity of fitness, permit (all types), licence, registration or any other concerned document(s) may be treated to be valid till September 30, 2021," the ministry said in a tweet.

"This covers all documents whose validity has expired since February 1, 2020, or would expire by September 30, 2021. This will help out citizens in availing transport-related services, while maintaining social distancing," it noted in another tweet.

Similar advisories extending the validity of vehicle documents were issued by MoRTH to all states and union territories on March 30, 2020; June 9, 2020; August 24, 2020; December 27, 2020; and March 26, 2021.
