In the wake of the increasing cases of coronavirus in the country, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday evening issued a statement saying all landports have been fully equipped medical teams present to screen all incoming passengers from neighbouring countries.

The MHA also stated that the medical examinations are being conducted at Dera Baba Nanak, Attari entry points. The MHA said full medical check-up points have been set up at international entry points at Petrapole and Agartala. Here are the top developments on the deadly disease which has affected 29 people in the country.

An outbreak of a new SARS-like coronavirus (COVID-19), which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has claimed more than 3,100 lives and infected over 90,000 people around the world. With 2,943 deaths, China is the worst affected, with fatalities reported in other countries and regions such as the U.S., Australia, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, France, Taiwan, Iran, Italy and South Korea, which also has the highest cases of confirmed infections outside China.   1. With the concern growing over the spike in coronavirus cases, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal formed a task force and said efforts are on to screen the people who came in contact with the infected Delhi man and 16 Italian tourists.
  2. In the wake of the coronavirus, a number of resident welfare associations and schools have cancelled events as people in the city were asked to avoid large gatherings. Concerned over the spread of virus, three schools in Delhi-NCR have announced holidays for students and staff, and two schools advanced their spring break and others sent out advisories to parents.
  3. For the treatment of patients, isolation wards in 19 government and six private hospitals have been set up across the national capital and thermal scanning of all passengers landing from abroad is being conducted at the airport as well.
  4. On the other hand, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) stated that it will increase the frequency of cleaning on its premises in view of the coronavirus outbreak. The DMRC has also issued do’s and dont’s in both English and Hindi regarding the virus.
  5. Finance regulator Irdai has asked insurance companies to come out with policies to cover treatment costs for coronavirus infection, which has impacted thousands of people worldwide. Insurers are now introducing products for various specific diseases, including vector borne diseases.
  6. In Gurugram, a Paytm employee has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the company said and advised its employees to work from home for the next couple of days. The company said the infected employee had recently returned from a vacation in Italy.
  7. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) allowed its students to carry masks, hand sanitiser during the ongoing Class 10 and 12 board exams to exam halls. Issuing a statement, the CBSE said that face masks and sanitisers may be carried by students, if they so desire, in the examination centres.
  8. President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday evening said that the Rashtrapati Bhavan will not hold the traditional Holi gatherings this year keeping the safety aspect in mind. “With alertness and safeguards, we all can help contain the outbreak of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus. In a precautionary measure, the Rashtrapati Bhavan will not hold the traditional Holi gatherings,” President Kovind said in a tweet.
  9. Prior to this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that he has decided not to participate in any Holi Milan programme in view of the coronavirus outbreak. “Experts across the world have advised to reduce mass gatherings to avoid the spread of COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus. Hence, this year I have decided not to participate in any Holi Milan programme,” PM Modi said.
  10. Expressing concern over the rising cases of coronavirus in the country, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and a host of other ministers said they will not participate in any Holi Milan celebration this year. They also urged all to avoid public gatherings to avoid coronavirus.

The development comes as new cases of coronavirus have been reported from Agra (6) and Jaipur (16). Meanwhile, two cases with high viral load have also been detected in Telangana. Out of 28 cases, 15 are Italian nationals.
