Seemanchal Express accident LIVE updates: 7 dead, 29 injured as 11 coaches derail in Bihar

Seven people have died and more than 20 are injured in Bihar after eleven coaches of the Seemanchal Express derailed on Sunday morning. The accident on the Delhi-bound train occurred in Vaishali district of Bihar. The train was running between Jogbani and Anand Vihar Terminal. Railway officials said it was at its full speed when the accident occurred around 3:50am. The Railways has issued helpline numbers to assist the injured and their family members. Teams of NDRF have reached the spot to carry out relief and rescue operations. Indian Railways has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased. Seemanchal Express accident: Based on initial probe, it has been found that a fracture in railway track caused the accident. Railway track fracture is said to be a common occurrence in the region owing to cold weather conditions in winter.

The Bihar government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. This is in addition to the relief announced by the central government, which has announced Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased.

Seemanchal Express accident: The Railways has said that based on preliminary investigations, the train derailment was caused due to "rail fracture of CMC X-ing at Barauni". Rajesh Kumar, Chief Public Relations Officer, East Central Railway, said, "Prima facie cause of Seemanchal Express accident is rail fracture of CMS X-ing at Barauni end of station yard.Unaffected 12 coaches are being moved to Hajipur where more coaches to be attached and train will move for Anand Vihar Terminal Railway Station (ANVT)."

The death toll in the Seemanchal Express accident has risen to seven. So far, six people had died an more than 24 injured. News agency ANI has quoted East Central Railway (ECR) General Manager LC Trivedi saying: "Seven people have lost their lives in Seemachal Express derailment accident."

Seemanchal Express accident live updates: The Indian Railways has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of every deceased. The announcement was made from the Twitter handle of Railway minister Piyush Goyal. It said Rs 1 lakh would also be given to the grievously injured and Rs 50,000 to those who suffered simple injuries. "All medical expenses will also be born by Railways," the tweet said.

Seemanchal Express train accident: Speaking to news agency ANI, Additional Director General PR (Rail), Smita Vats Sharma said the Raiway is focusing on rescue and relief operations at present. "Railway Accident Medical Van, along with team of doctors are at site. Two teams of NDRF have also reached the spot."

Seemanchal Express accident: The Indian Raiway has started relief and rescue operations. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is in touch with members of the Railway Board and General Manager East-Central Railways regarding the Seemanchal Express accident. "Relief and rescue operations are underway. He has expressed profound grief over the loss of innocent lives in this tragic accident and wished speedy recovery for the injured," Goyal's office said in a tweet.

The 12487 Jogbani-Anand Vihar Terminal Seemanchal Express was running at full speed when the accident occurred, the officials said.

A team of doctors has rushed to the accident site from Sonpur and Barauni. Accident relief train has also moved for carrying out relief and rescue operations.
