One person died and at least eight went missing after a labour camp located in Mamkhola got washed away due to heavy rainfall at the Sevoke Rangpo rail project site near Kalimpong.

The incident took place early morning on Friday when intense rainfall and landslide resulted in swelling of the rivulet near the camp, washing away the eight labourers who were working on the night shift.

Meanwhile, three people were rescued with the help of locals and two of them were admitted with injuries at a Sikkim hospital.

Search and rescue operations were underway for the missing labourers. Police along with a local rafting team and disaster management group personnel are at the spot.
