Food safety department officials on Saturday seized 4,000 kilos of artificial mangoes sprayed with chemicals at Gandhi market in Trichy district, Tamil Nadu and destroyed them.

A team of the food safety department in the district, led by Officer R Rameshbabu, raided ten godowns at Trichy Gandhi Market soon after receiving a tip-off regarding the ripening of mangoes.

According to media reports, ethylene was used in at least three godowns to artificially ripe the fruit.

Officials warned vendors that such acts should not be practiced and that severe action would be taken against culprits under Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.
