Setting the dice rolling for the West Bengal elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of backstabbing the people of the state even as the TMC supremo, 570 km away in north Bengal, held a roadshow in protest against the hike in price of LPG and fuel.

Addressing his first campaign rally at Kolkata's iconic Brigade Parade Ground, PM Modi said, "This ground has been witness to many great leaders and also witnessed those who have disrupted West Bengal's progress. People of Bengal never left their hopes for change."

PM Modi exhorted people to vote for a BJP government to experience "asol poriborton (real change)". "The dream of 'sonar bangla' will be fulfilled. Today, I have come here today to assure you of Bengal's development, to increase investment here, to protect Bengal's culture and to bring change," he said.

The high-voltage rally saw vetaran actor Mithun Chakraborty joining the BJP in the presence of party chief Dilip Ghosh and general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya.

The Prime Minister said the Mamata Banerjee government had deprived common people, including farmers, educated youths and the poor of the Centre's beneficiary schemes and projects.

"The next 25 years are very important for development in Bengal...In 2047, when India will celebrate 100 years of independence, Bengal will lead the country once again," he said.

At a time when TMC has projected Mamata as Bengal's own daughter, PM Modi said the state's mothers and women were being attacked and received only 'nirmamta' (cruelty).

"You are well aware of the condition of 'Maa, Manush, Maati'. Mothers are being attacked on streets and in their houses. Recently, the cruelty unleashed on an 80-year-old mother has shown their cruel face to the entire country," PM Modi said.

The PM was referring to the recent attack on a BJP worker and his 85-year-old mother by miscreants in West Bengal's North 24 Parangas district.

LPG prices are rising, Modi's tolabaji on rise too, says Mamata

Taking a swipe at Narendra Modi over his 'Sonar Bangla' promise, Mamata Banerjee called him a "liar", saying the PM had come to sell dreams in Bengal at a time when fuel prices were rising steeply and banks were being sold.

"He is talking about sonar bangla. But what about sonar India? LPG prices are rising, Modi's tolabaaji is on the rise too...He sold Delhi. From Air India to BSNL, he is selling public assets too," Banerjee after holding a roadshow in Siliguri.

"PM Modi is the biggest and your Adani friends are doing the biggest tolabaaji by selling public assets," she further said.

Raking up the issue of Covid-19 vaccination certificates carrying a photograph of Modi, Mamata said, "During Covid, he could not come. I was on the streets. Today, his face is on the Covid vaccine certificates. It is our scientists who have worked hard."
