Berlin: In yet another unusual attempt to bring the world's attention to climate change issues, environmentalist activists shut air traffic at Berlin airport by gluing themselves to the runway. Berlin-Brandenburg Airport on Thursday closed its takeoff and landing runways as climate protesters jumped onto a runway and glued themselves to the tarmac.

Activists from the Last Generation environmental group were also spotted riding bicycles at the shunting area, hence bringing air traffic to a standstill, as per reports by Sky News.

"The plane is not a means of transport for ordinary people. Most people - about 80 per cent of the world's population - have never flown in their lives. One affluent per cent of the population is responsible for around half of flight-related greenhouse gas emissions," read a statement by the Last Generation environmental group.

The group further called upon the public to avoid travelling by air and urged the government to stop subsidising it.

"Supporters of the last generation are currently blocking the runway of BER. Some are glued to the asphalt, and others ride their bikes across the shunting area, bringing air traffic to a standstill. Before entering BER, they informed the police," read a tweet on the Twitter handle of the environmentalist group along with pictures of the activists glued on the tarmac.

In a similar style of protest earlier this month, dozens of climate activists cycled the Amsterdam airport while being chased by the police. A viral video on the internet showed around 500 activists from Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion breaking into the eastern section of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to prevent private jets from taking off.
