Congratulating Ghulam Nabi Azad on his Padma award, veteran Congress leader Karan Singh launched a veiled attack on party colleague Jairam Ramesh over his 'Azad, not Ghulam' remark.

He said if a party leader gets any honour, then others must greet him with warm appreciation and not make snide remarks, adding that he was distressed at the controversy over the Padma award to Ghulam Nabi Azad.

"These national awards should not become a subject of inter-party controversy, far less of intra-party ones," Karan Singh said.

Tweeting the news of former Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee rejecting the Padma Bhushan award, Jairam Ramesh had posted a cryptic caption, which seemed to be a subtle jibe at Ghulam Nabi Azad's name on the list of Padma awardees.

In the tweet, Jairam Ramesh said: "Right thing to do. He wants to be Azad, not Ghulam".

Senior leader and member of the group of 23 who wanted organisational reforms in the party, Kapil Sibal, pointed out that it was ironic that the Congress does not need the services of Ghulam Nabi Azad when the nation recognises his contributions.

Kapil Sibal said, "Ghulam Nabi Azad conferred Padam Bhushan. Congratulations bhaijan. Ironic that the Congress doesn't need his services when the nation recognises his contributions to public life."

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor congratulated Ghulam Nabi Azad on being conferred with the Padma award.
