Over 16 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in India so far

The total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 16 crore with nearly 11.5 lakh doses administered till 8 pm on Tuesday, the health ministry said.

It said 2,29,999 beneficiaries in the 18-44 age group received the first dose of the vaccine on Tuesday. A total of 6,62,619 people in this age group have so far received the first dose across 12 states and Union territories.

The total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in the country stands at 16,04,18,105, according to a provisional report compiled at 8 pm. "India also administered more than 13 crore (13,00,03,225) doses as the first dose and more than three crore (3,04,14,880) vaccine doses as the second dose," the ministry said.

Covid-19 surge: Odisha seals border with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

After sealing the border with Chhattisgarh in west and West Bengal in north, the Odisha government Tuesday closed its border with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in south with an intent to check the spread of the virus in the state. Following reports on observation of a virulent variant of Covid-19 in people of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the Odisha government made a 14-day quarantine mandatory for people coming to Odisha from the two states, Chief Secretary SC Mahapatra said in an order.

The district magistrates of six districts have been asked to ensure that none enter or exit from Odisha through border with these two neighbouring states. "Anyone coming to Odisha from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana by personal/hired vehicles and trains or entering the state on any other mode shall undergo mandatory institutional quarantine for 14 days in cluster temporary medical centres (TMC) to be managed by BDO or executive offices of urban bodies," he said in the order. At 3,824, Himachal Pradesh records single-day spike in Covid cases; 48 deaths

Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday recorded the highest single-day spike of 3,824 fresh Covid-19 cases and 48 deaths, a senior official said, citing data updated till 7 pm. The Covid-19 death toll in the state now stands at 1,647 and tally at 1,10,945. Of the state's new casualties, 15 were reported in the worst hit district of Kangra, following 11 in Solan, six in Sirmaur, four each in Shimla and Hamirpur, three in Una, two each in Chamba and Kullu and one in Mandi, Special Health Secretary Nipun Jindal said.

Railway isolation coaches see 146 admissions, 80 discharges

Isolation coaches of the Railways have admitted 146 Covid-19 patients since the outbreak of the second wave of the viral disease and 80 of them have been discharged, while 66 people are currently utilising the facility in the country, the national transporter said on Tuesday. The Railways has readied a fleet of nearly 4,000 isolation coaches with almost 64,000 beds to serve as isolation units, it said.

While states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh already have such facilities deployed, the latest to requisition them are Gujarat and Nagaland.

"Railway has catered to their demand and positioned the coaches at Sabarmati, Chandlodiya and Dimapur respectively. In keeping with Covid safety protocols, the Railways are also taking utmost efforts to devise ways to facilitate better work-convenience for the state medical personnel on duty," the ministry said in a statement.

"At some locations, the Railway authorities have also provided new logistical solutions like supported ramps on stair-cases for hassle-free transport of sick patients besides facilitative conveniences like make-shift tents, area segregation for better isolation on railway platforms that serve as freeway for movement of medical personnel and supplies in these Covid care facility," it added.

In Gujarat, the Railways has deployed 10 coaches in Sabarmati and six in Chandlodiya. In Nagaland, 10 isolation coaches have been stationed in Dimapur, the statement said.

6,000 Remdesivir injections arrive in MP's Indore

At least 6,000 vials of Remdesivir injections arrived here on Tuesday, of which a major portion was sent to divisional headquarters of Madhya Pradesh for further distribution amid the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, a senior official said. Of the batch of 6,000 vials, 1,056 were reserved for Indore and 1,104 have been dispatched to Bhopal, the official said. At least 960 vials will be sent to Jabalpur, 576 to Sagar and 768 each to Gwalior, Ujjain and Rewa divisions of the state, he said. (PTI)

Mumbai logs 2,554 new Covid-19 cases, 62 deaths

Mumbai on Tuesday reported 2,554 fresh coronavirus positive cases and 62 deaths, taking the count of infections to 6,61,420 and the toll to 13,470, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. This is the second consecutive day that the country's financial capital has recorded less than 3,000 cases.

As compared to Monday, the number of infections dipped by over 100 and the number of fatalities by 10. The day before, the city had witnessed 2,662 cases and 78 deaths.

This is also the third consecutive day that the number of Covid-19 tests conducted in the city remained below the 30,000-mark.

J&K administration extends lockdown in 4 districts till May 10

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has extended the night curfew in four districts-- Jammu, Srinagar, Budgam and Baramulla-- till 6 am of May 10. A lockdown will also be imposed in Samba district from tomorrow 7 pm till 7 am of May 10.

Gujarat imposes night curfew in 7 more cities from 8 pm to 6 am

The Gujarat government has imposed night curfew in seven more cities Deesa, Ankleshwar, Vapi, Modasa, Radhanpur, Kadi and Visangar from 8 pm to 6 am. With this total 36 cities of the state will be under 8 pm to 6 am night curfew from May 6 to May 12. Meanwhile mall, shopping complexs, gym, park, city bus service, clothes shops and salons will remain shut till May 12.

Delhi govt closed 5 vaccination centres run by by SDMC: Narendra Chawla

SDMC's Leader of House Narendra Chawla has alleged that Delhi Government has closed five vaccination centres run by the corporation. Over 44,000 fresh Covid-19 cases, 239 deaths recorded in Karnataka

Karnataka on Monday reported 44,438 Covid-19 cases and 239 related deaths, taking the total caseload and fatalities to 16.46 lakh and 16,250, respectively. Bengaluru Urban alone accounted for 22,112 infections. The day also saw 20,901 patients getting discharged.

From a week’s point of view, total active cases in the state increased from 3,01,899 on April 27 to 4,44,734 on May 3. Even daily cases in the state increased from 31,830 to 44,000 plus in a week’s time. The positivity rate has also increased from 18.71% to 29.80%. (With inputs from Nolan Pinto)

Kerala registers 37,190 fresh Covid-19 cases, 57 deaths today

While 1,42,588 samples have been tested in the last 24 hours, test positivity rate stands at 26.08 per cent in Kerala. Meanwhile, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan flagged about the vaccine shortage and said that only 2,40,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine is left in stock.

"This will last only upto maximum two days. 4 lakh Covishield vaccines and 70k Covaxin are expected today," CM VIjayan said.

Telengana govt directs private hospitals to admit Covid-19 patients woth moderate, severe symptoms only

Taking into cognizance the rise of Covid-19 cases in the state, the Telangana government has directed all private hospitals to admit Covid-19 patients having moderate and severe symptoms only.

"For admitting patients with moderate/severe symptoms the hospitals should not wait or ask for the Covid-19 test result. All private hospitals are further directed to keep a display board at the entrance of the hospitals giving updated details of the availability of the regular beds, oxygen beds, ICU beds (Ventilator/CPAP) on real time basis," an official notification said. Delhi govt reduces oxygen quota for Army Base Hospital: Sources

The Delhi government has reduced the quota of oxygen for the Army Base Hospital in Delhi Cantt and the Army authorities have taken up the matter with the local authorities through the Defence Ministry, sources in the army said on Tuesday.

The hospital has enough supplies for the time being and can take care of its patients, but the issue has to be addressed shortly otherwise it can lead to shortages, they added.

The top five states which have registered maximum cases are Maharashtra with 48,621 cases, followed by Karnataka with 44,438 cases, Uttar Pradesh with 29,052 cases, Kerala with 26,011 cases and Tamil Nadu with 20,952 Covid-19 cases.

Of the new Covid-19 cases, 47.33 per cent are reported from these five states, with Maharashtra alone responsible for 13.61 per cent of the new cases. A total of 3,449 people died from the Covid-19 infection in the past 24 hours. The maximum fatalities were reported in Maharashtra (567), followed by Delhi with 448 daily deaths.

US flights with medical supplies for India delayed till Wednesday

Meanwhile, Italy on Monday sent to India a team of experts and medical equipment, while the UK delivered a fourth consignment of aid comprising 60 ventilators to back the country's battle against a deadly second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Separately, the European Union announced additional emergency medical support by its member countries including Denmark, Spain and Netherlands to India.
