Covid19 In Rural India: Are We Prepared To Tackle The Surge?| IndiaSpend | Govindraj Ethiraj |Health

#CovidRuralIndia As the #COVID19 cases are soaring in India, it is also having an invisible impact in the rural areas. But is rural India prepared to tackle the surge? IndiaSpend's Govindraj Ethiraj speaks to Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director at Population Foundation of India & Dr Pavitra Mohan, secretary at Basic Healthcare Services. Covid is spreading swiftly into the remotest parts of rural India right now and people are suffering from severe disease, warns Dr Mohan. "This time we are not prepared," says Poonam Muttreja. “Last time we kept asking - will #COVID reach the villages? We were lucky that it didn’t. But this time it has reached rural India & we haven’t developed any infrastructure to deal with it,” she adds. “We need to believe in the public healthcare system. In the districts where it was stronger, they quickly responded to COVID. The pandemic has shown the exploitative side of the private healthcare system,” points out Dr Mohan.
