Elephant gets stuck in flooded Uttarakhand river, rescued later. Viral video

For the past two days, the situation in Uttarakhand has been deteriorating as torrential rains triggered flash floods in several areas of the state. Reports of the collapse of a portion of a bridge in Haldwani due to the furious rise of the Gaula river have also surfaced. Visuals of water from the river flowing furiously and swiping away anything in its path have gone viral. Among such disturbing videos, one clip showing an elephant stuck on a mud island in Gaula river in Nainital is doing rounds on social media.

A video, shared on Twitter by IFS officer Surender Mehra, has left netizens in shock. In the clip, the elephant can be seen helplessly trying to find its way out from the flooded area.

"When an elephant stuck in a swollen river in Uttarakhand. But, ultimately, it could cross over to forests," reads the caption.

With over 8,000 views, the video prompted netizens to share various kinds of opinions. From terming the floods as a 'man-made' disaster to enquiring about the elephant's condition, people reacted in many ways.

The elephant apparently made its way to safety with the help of some forest officials. "As soon as we received the info, a team of forest dept was dispatched. The elephant had crossed the river & moved towards Dev Rampur. The forest dept has pushed its way towards the forest. Its movement is being monitored," said Sandeep Kumar, DFO Haldwani.
