Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi has rejected the government's offer to be appointed as the next Attorney General, sources have confirmed.

The Centre had earlier approached Mukul Rohatgi for the office of the Attorney General once current AG KK Venugopal demits office at the end of the month.

Despite serving as the attorney general for the BJP government for three years from 2014 to 2017, Mukul Rohatgi has now rejected the offer expressing his inability in taking up the post. Rohatgi has communicated his decision to the Centre and thanked them for the offer.

Sources had earlier indicated that an agreement between the former Attorney General and the Centre was reached a few weeks back for the appointment to the top law officer's post. However, Mukul Rohatgi seems to have had second thoughts after which he has expressed his inability to take up the offer.

The tenure of the current Attorney General ends on September 30.
