A two-month-old baby who tested positive for Covid-19 and died at a hospital in Jammu on Sunday was abandoned by his parents. The parents refused to take the body and fled soon after the baby's death, officials said.

The incident took place at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh Hospital in Jammu.

"The baby had congenital heart issues and died after testing positive for Covid-19. The parents ran away soon after. They left the hospital without taking the body of their baby," said an official at the hospital.

The hospital staff said they tried their best to persuade the parents to take the body. However, they did not succeed. The hospital officials are trying to get in touch with the parents but have had no luck so far.

The body has temporarily been kept in the hospital morgue. If the parents cannot be contacted or located, the last rites of the baby will be conducted according to Covid-19 protocols.

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir reported 3,733 new Covid-19 cases and 51 deaths on Monday. Of these, 35 deaths were registered in Jammu division.
