Denver: Two small planes collided mid-air in Colorado's Denver region killing three people on the spot, confirmed police on Sunday. The identities of the victims are yet to be released as authorities are investigating the crash.

In an official statement, Boulder County Sherrif's Office said the two occupants of an airplane were found dead in the wreckage while the occupant of another plane was also found dead in wreckage at a separate location.

The accident occurred at around 9 am (local time) on Saturday. The authorities are trying to ascertain the identities of the victims before releasing them in public.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement that it was investigating a collision between a Cessna 172 and a Sonex Xenos aircraft near Longmont, Colorado. Longmont is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Denver.

It should be noted that the Sonex Xenos is a light, aluminum, low-wing homebuilt aircraft that seats two while the Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a popular single-engine aircraft that seats four.

Earlier on Friday, a single-engine plane made an emergency landing on a Southern California beach afternoon, ending up in some rocks at the foot of a jetty.

A Ventura Police Department spokesman told the VC Star that none of the three people in the plane and no one on the ground was hurt.
