The birthday of Mahatma Gandhi on Oct. 2 is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday in India, and recognized worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence. Also known as the "Father of the Nation" in India, Gandhi played a pioneering role in India's struggle for independence and emerged as a global icon of non-violent protest.
