The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has decided to stake it's claim to at least 12 seats in the Assembly elections in Bihar. Though it wants to be a part of an alliance headed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), but at the same time it has dropped a hint that if their demands are not being conceded, the party would be free to take its own decision.

The JMM's move and new stand is seen as a pressure tactic to get a fair share in Bihar.

After a massive success in Assembly polls in Jharkhand, the JMM seems to have a high morale. It had stunned its critics by winning 30 seats and beating the ruling BJP in 2019 Assembly elections that paved a way to form government with its pre poll allies. The party is on cloud nine and sounds fully confident since then.

It has also decided to appeal the Election Commission for restoration of the party's original symbol in Bihar. The party's symbol was seized by the EC on the objection of the Janata Dal United (JDU) during the last parliamentary elections.

The JDU had reservations over the JMM's symbol of bow and arrow. It had made a submission before the EC that the JMM's symbol resembles their symbol and it could affect their electoral prospects adversely. Following which, the EC had seized the symbol of the JMM.

The JMM will contest on the seats that are located near the border of Jharkhand. It is eyeing the seats like Tarapur, Katoria, Manihari, Jhajha, Banka, Thakur Ganj, Rupauli, Rampur, Vanmankhi, Jamalpur, Pirpainti and Chakayi. The JMM had registered a win in 2005 Assembly elections on Chakayi seat.

As to why the RJD would concede the JMM's demand of 12 seats when they had offered only 7 seats to the RJD in Jharkhand Assembly polls, the party's general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya said, "Yes we did leave only 7 seats, but RJD won on only one. Despite the figures of winning, we inducted the lone MlA of RJD in Hemant Soren cabinet. If we are alloted the seats, we demand the popular Hemant model and his perception would bring an edge and advantage to all the allies under Mahagathbandhan umbrella against NDA."
