Perth: A 16-year-old girl died in a horrific shark attack while swimming in a river in Western Australia. As per reports, the girl, from Perth, was believed to have been riding jet skis with friends in the Swan river when the incident took place on Saturday, as per BBC. Paul Robinson, from Western Australia Police, noted that it was possible that the girl, at some point, jumped in the water to swim with dolphins seen nearby. She was declared dead after being pulled from the river.

Robinson described the incident as 'very, very traumatic' and said her family was 'absolutely devastated by the news'. He further noted that in the opinion of fisheries experts, it is unusual to find sharks in that part of the river.

Notably, this is believed to be the first fatal shark attack in Swan river after the 1923 incident when a 13-year-old boy was killed.

Last year in August, a woman was attacked by a shark off the UK coast in the 'first incident of its kind in 175 years'. The female swimmer, who was on a snorkelling trip in Penzance harbour in Cornwall, suffered from a suspected shark bite on her leg. The woman was swimming some 15 miles out to sea during the £180 per person excursion when the shark, unprovoked, suddenly bit her leg.
