She vanished during the anti-hijab protests in Iran. Days later, her body was handed over to her family. Nika Shakarami's nose was smashed, her skull pounded. The 17-year-old is among the many who have been killed in a police crackdown on women-led protests across the Islamic Republic.

Nika Shakarami, 17, was the one among the thousands who have taken to the streets in various places in Iran against the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman, in moral police custody for allegedly not wearing hijab properly.

She went missing during a protest. A week later, her body was returned with her nose smashed and her skull broken from blows.

According to The Telegraph report, Nika Shakarami stated in her last phone call to a friend that she was fleeing security forces.

The Shakarami family was not allowed to see her head when they went to identify the body, according to media reports. Her nose had been smashed. Nika's skull had been repeatedly pounded by a heavy object, possibly a baton. The source of her suspicious injuries is not yet known.

Kurdish Iranian Mahsa Amini, 22, was pronounced dead on September 16 after she was detained for allegedly breaching rules requiring women to wear hijab headscarves and modest clothes, sparking Iran's biggest wave of popular unrest in almost three years.

Within days, protests spread across the country, with women coming out on the streets and demonstrating against morality policing. Women waved and burned their veils, and some cut their hair in public.

But, Iran has accused outside forces of stoking the nationwide protests, especially the United States and Washington's Western allies.
