Tokyo: Trains were temporarily suspended in parts of Japan and residents urged to evacuate to shelters in the early hours of Tuesday as North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile. The latest launch was Pyongyang's fifth in 10 days and comes amid military muscle-flexing by the United States and South Korea. The two countries had conducted trilateral anti-submarine exercises last week with Japanese naval forces.

"North Korea appears to have launched a missile. Please evacuate into buildings or underground," the government said in an alert issued at 7:29 am today (local time). National broadcaster NHK said the alert was in effect for two areas - the northernmost main island of Hokkaido and the country's northeastern prefecture of Aomori.
