IPL 2022 IPL 2022

The next season of Indian Premier League (IPL) is a few month's away but the buzz around the tournament has hit the roof as November 30 is the deadline day for the 8 existing teams to name their retained players. While some big names are obvious choices, the teams are set to take some tough calls, make bold decisions as they look to create a core that will serve them for the next few years.

IPL 2022 will be preceded by a mega auction and there are going to be two new teams -- one each from Lucknow and Ahmedabad -- making the new season a 10-team affair.

The existing 8 teams were given time until November 30 to work out their retention as the two new teams will be allowed to pick 3 players between December 1 and 25 so that all 10 teams will head into the mega auction on an even keel.

How many players can the 8 teams retain?

A team can retain a maximum of 4 players before the auction. They can either go for a maximum of 3 Indian players or a maximum of 2 overseas players. The three Indians retained can all be capped or be uncapped or a mix of both.

How much money will teams have before the mega auction?

Each team will have a maximum purse of Rs 90 crore before the mega auction for IPL 2022.

How much will the teams spend for retaining players (salary cap)?

The cost for retaining players will be deducted from the total purse of Rs 90 crore. An uncapped player will cost a team Rs 4 crore.

Scenario 1: A team retains 4 players

Total cost for retention: Rs 42 crore

Player 1: Rs 16 crore

Player 2: Rs 12 crore

Player 3: Rs 8 crore

Player 4: Rs 6 crore

Scenario 2: A team retains 3 players

Total cost for retention: Rs 33 crore

Player 1: Rs 15 crore

Player 2: Rs 11 crore

Player 3: Rs 7 crore

Scenario 3: A team retains 2 players

Total cost for retention: Rs 24 crore

Player 1: Rs 14 crore

Player 2: Rs 10 crore

Scenario 4: A team retains only 1 player

Player: Rs 14 crore

When will the IPL 2022 player retention be announced?

The IPL 2022 player retention will be announced on November 30 from 5 pm IST.

Can players choose to leave the franchise and enter the auction pool?

Yes. Teams have been negotiating with players ahead of retention. The actual cost for retaining a player can be lesser or more than the specified salary cap.

For instance, if a team picks a player as their first choice after retaining 4 players, they need not necessarily pay Rs 16 crore to him but the said amount will be deducted from their purse for the auction.
