Virat Kohli's impact as captain on Indian cricket is similar to that of Brendon McCullum's on New Zealand, spinner Ajaz Patel has said. The Kiwi spinner, who took a historic 10-wicket haul in India's first innings, said that Kohli has forever changed Indian cricket.

"Congrats to @imVkohli on your tenure as @BCCI captain, the legacy and direction you leave behind has forever changed Indian cricket. Much like we saw @BLACKCAPS by @Bazmccullum," said Ajaz in his tweet.

Ajaz's 10-wicket haul came against India while they were captained by Kohli in Mumbai. Kohli had sat out the first Test of the series, in which Ajaz and Rachin Ravindra managed to hold on to the last New Zealand wicket to eck out a draw. Kohli and India head coach Rahul Dravid could be seen congratulating Ajaz in the dressing room.

While Ajaz took four more wickets in the second innings, India ended up winning the match by 372 runs.

Kohli stepped down as captain a day after India lost their third Test against South Africa, thus conceding a 1-2 defeat in the series. He became Test captain in December 2014 and under him, India lost just two Tests at home and managed a historic series win in Australia in 2019. Kohli was also captain when India took a 2-1 lead against England in an incomplete series away from home.

"It's been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I have done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India. It' now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief," Kohli said in his post announcing his decision on Saturday.
