Australia put their opening defeat against France behind them as they secured a 1-0 win over Tunisia on Saturday to move to second place in Group D.

Mitchell Duke's header proved to be the difference on the day when Socceroos defence was right on the money.

Australia started on the front foot from kick-off and were threatening the Tunisian box in the opening exchanges of the game. The African side soon found their footing and slowly made their way into the game.

The first sighter of goal fell to Tunisian captain Youssef Msakni but he was quickly crowded out by the Socceroos defence before he could get a shot on goal.

Australia's persistence was rewarded in the 23rd minute when Duke found himself in the box to divert a deflected cross into the back of the net and past Tunisia's goalkeeper Dahmen. This was incidentally the 50th goal of this year's World Cup.

The goal seemed to have deflated Tunisia as they struggled to find rhythm and pace in their attacks. However, they regained their touch and could have levelled the score in the 40th minute if not for Harry Souttar's well-timed block to prevent a goal.

The African team had their best chance in stoppage time of the first half when captain Mskani had a glorious chance but missed the chance.

Australia held on to their lead heading into half-time and was straightaway on the back foot when the game restarted. The Tunisian attackers peppered the Socceroos box with a few crosses but Mat Ryan was relatively untested in goal.

Tunisia kept on applying the pressure on Australia but it was the Socceroos who had the first big chance of the second half. Mathew Leckie found himself in the box but the cross from the left evaded him.

The African team ringed in the changes in an attempt to get the equalizer as the game slowly became end-to-end as we headed into the final quarter.

The Socceroos defence was resolute in the final moments of the match with Souttar putting in a Man Of The Match performance with some important tackles.

In the 88th minute, Wahbi Khazri had a great chance to equalize but Ryan was up to the task and had an easy save to make in the end.

Despite their best efforts, Tunisia couldn't get past the defence of Australia who held on for the win. The Socceroos will now face Denmark in their final group game while the African team take on defending champions France.
