Carlos Alcaraz survived a five-set whirlwind, while Emma Raducanu secured an easy straight sets win in their respective singles first round matches at Wimbledon on Monday.

The Spaniard Alcaraz reaffirmed why he is considered to be the next big name in the sport as he defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4.

Alcaraz has enjoyed an incredible outing on clay and hardcourts this season, winning titles in Rio, Miami, Barcelona and Madrid. The 19-year-old, who is still adjusting on grasscourt surface, overcame Struff to meet either Italian Fabio Fognini or Dutch Tallon Griekspoor in the second round.

Meanwhile, Raducanu, who made her debut on centre court, handed a 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Alison Van Uytvanck. The 2019 US Open champion lived up to the expectations at her home Slam. She will meet Caroline Garcia of France in the second round.
