COVID-19 crisis: Anupam Kher feels 'it is important to hold the government responsible'

Senior actor Anupam Kher frequently comes under fire on social media for allegedly being biased towards the ruling government. Of course, it doesn't help matters that his wife, actress-turned politician Kirron Kher is a BJP MP. However, in a recent interview, Anupam Kher criticised the government and said that it is important to hold the government responsible for what is happening in the country as the second COVID-19 wave continues to wreak havoc in India. The country’s healthcare infrastructure is left overburdened with people scrambling for hospital beds and oxygen cylinders. Amid this health crisis, many on social media are questioning the government’s handling of the current situation. Kher, a staunch supporter of the BJP-led government, said that public criticism towards authorities is 'valid in lots of cases'. He further said that it was time for the government to understand that there's more to life than image building and said, 'Somewhere they have slipped. It is time for them to understand that there is much more to life than just image building maybe...I think only an inhuman person will not get affected by... bodies floating. We should as people ... get angry ... it is important to hold the government responsible for what has happened.' Having said that, the actor also feels it may be wrong for the other political parties to use such lapses to its advantage. He added, 'But for another political party to use it for their gain, I think that is also not right.' Only recently, Kher was highly criticised for defending the government amid the current crisis. Among many other things, he had said in a tweet, '...Don’t worry. Modi will come back! Jai ho!' in response to a tweet by a senior journalist who had slammed the government for not being able to handle the crisis.
