Oxygen Crunch Tops Agenda. Dr Naresh Trehan, Chairman, Medanta with his views.Amid reports of shortage of oxygen in the hospitals during the second wave of Covid across the country, India will be importing oxygen generation plants and containers from Germany to cater for the shortage.Government sources said that 23 mobile oxygen generation plants are being airlifted from Germany. These will be deployed in static hospitals and provide adequate oxygen to the needy.Further, sources said that India is procuring a large number of oxygen containers for an adequate supply of oxygen in Delhi and other states.The Indian Air Force (IAF) is ferrying empty oxygen tankers to filling stations across the country, pressing its transport fleet into action at a time when SOS calls for medical oxygen are ringing out from different corners.On Twitter, IAF has said its “transport fleet is supporting the fight against Covid-19”, while also airlifting “medical personnel, critical equipment and medicines”.IAF aircraft C-17, IL-76, C-130 J, AN-32 and AVROS are crisscrossing the Indian skies to eliminate supply obstacles in the distribution of oxygen, a life-saving resource for critical Covid-19 patients.On Friday, the defence ministry sanctioned emergency financial powers of Rs five crore to the director-general of medical services of the three services to make procurement to boost medical infrastructure given a surge in COVID-19 cases in the country. According to an official order, emergency powers for procurement worth Rs 3crore were delegated to major general-rank medical officers, while brigadier-rank medical officials will have the powers to make purchases worth Rs 2crore.The formal order came four days after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced granting emergency financial powers to the three services and other defence agencies to make necessary procurement to enhance medical infrastructure given the pandemic.
