
Sunderbans: Endangered river terrapins released into the wild with GPS
This is one of the most endangered species of turtles in the world. The West Bengal Forest Department released 10 northern river terrapins were released into the wild. They have also been fitted with GPS devices so forest officials can monitor their movement and get to know more about their habitat. In 2009, officials at the Sunderban Tiger Reserve and Turtle Survival Alliance started a breeding program at Sajnekhali after overfishing led to a rapid decline in their numbers.
