US wants India to manufacture its cheaper solar tech amidst over-dependence on China

India imports over 80 per cent of its solar cells and modules from China, creating an over-dependence on the neighbouring country. However, US Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette wants India to manufacture their cheaper alternative to silicon solar cells. The Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been developed in the US and promises to be a cheaper alternative to traditional silicon cells. India plans to increase its renewable energy capacity to 175 gigawatts by 2022, three-fifths of which will come from solar power.
