Barges Collide With Dam in Webbers Falls Amid Arkansas River Flooding

Two runaway barges collided with a dam on the Arkansas River near Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, on Thursday, May 23, after the boats broke loose of their moorings amid flooding, officials said. Videos posted on Facebook show a barge floating downstream and slamming into a concrete barrier at Lock and Dam 16. A crumpling sound can be heard in the footage as the first barge makes contact with the structure and sinks. The Town of Webbers Falls confirmed both barges were underwater on Thursday afternoon. The barges were secured upriver on Wednesday night, according to local media. However, swift waters caused by heavy rains and flooding caused the boats to break loose. Oklahoma Highway Patrol said it had closed Interstate 40. Police also confirmed there was no apparent damage to the concrete barrier. Credit: Bravado Wireless via Storyful
