President Of Czech Republic Milos Zeman Arrives In Serbia To Meet Aleksandar Vucic | News18

Incumbent Czech President Milos Zeman said on Monday (January 30) that the "neutral position" of Serbia could let the Balkan country play the role of a mediator between Russia and Ukraine.Speaking in Belgrade during a meeting with his Serbian counterpart, Zeman said Serbia not joining other European nations in sanctioning Russia makes it a candidate to potentially mediate in the conflict in Ukraine.The comments came as Zeman met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Belgrade, during one of his last visits as Czech president.On Saturday (January 28) a former army chief and high NATO official Petr Pavel won the Czech Republic's presidential election with a pledge to keep the country firmly anchored in the West and bridge society's political differences brought by Zeman. Pavel will take office in March.Zeman has been a divisive figure during his two terms in office over the past decade, who pushed for closer ties with Beijing and also with Moscow until Russia invaded Ukraine.
