BACHOK: Police today obtained a seven-day remand order against a 40-year-old man, a close relative of a baby who was murdered in Kampung Sungai Dua here yesterday.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Samsulmuddin Sulaiman said the remand order, which ends on Oct 20, was obtained at the Bachok magistrates court about noon under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

"We will also obtain a remand order for a female suspect, aged 32, who is also a close relative to the baby. She is currently under treatment at Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baru," he said.

Samsulmuddin said initial investigations showed the man was suspected to be mentally ill and is an odd-job worker in the village, while the woman was a housewife.

Both, he said, had tested negative for drug abuse.

"If possible, we will also send the male suspect for a psychiatric test," he said.

He said a post-mortem report showed the baby died after a hard hit to his head.

The naked body of the 8-month-old boy was found inside a gunny sack filled with salt at a house in Kampung Sungai Dua here yesterday.

Following the incident, police picked up the male suspect and later his wife to facilitate the case which is being investigated under Section 302 of Penal Code for murder.
