PETALING JAYA: Malaysia does not recognise Catalonia's unilateral declaration of independence from Spain.

"Malaysia respects the territorial integrity of Spain," the Foreign Ministry tweeted on Wednesday.

Last Friday (Oct 27), Catalan's regional parliament declared independence from the rest of the country in a disputed vote that will likely be declared illegal.

The upper house of Spain's parliament almost immediately authorised the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to rule Catalonia directly from Madrid.

The Spanish government also dissolved the Catalan parliament, fired the government and set Dec 21 as the date for regional elections.
