Danny Murphy reveals why England man has ‘got to go’ with Liverpool target backed to emulate Steven Gerrard

Danny Murphy feels it is inevitable that West Ham United star Declan Rice will move next summer and believes he should adopt a more attacking playing style.

Rice, 22, has developed into one of the best midfielders in the Premier League in recent years. He starred for England in the middle of the park alongside Kalvin Phillips at Euro 2020. And the Kingston upon Thames-born ace has, once again, been in the thick of the action for the Three Lions in Qatar.

Unsurprisingly, his rapid rise in the English game has prompted links to several top clubs.

Chelsea have been mentioned in connection with the former Republic of Ireland international. And Liverpool are thought to hold more than a passing interest in acquiring Rice’s services.

Hammers chief David Moyes would love to keep him at the London Stadium. And it is unlikely the Scot will let him leave for anything less than £100m

Indeed figures way north of that number have been mooted since last summer.

Murphy knows the youngster well. And the ex-Liverpool midfielder is confident both player and club recognise that he will be on his way next summer.

“I speak to Dec a lot and his dad and he’s so ambitious,” he said on the Vibe with Five podcast. “It’s not, ‘I’m desperate to leave’.

“But the reality is, I think last year, last summer when people spoke about him leaving, I think (David) Moyes spoke to him, West Ham spoke to him and said, ‘do another year’.”

“I think they’ve said to him, ‘we’ll let you go this summer’.

“I think the reason he’s saying that in his press conference because West Ham, depending on if they get the right amount, they’ll want a decent chunk.

“But It’s time for him to go, he’s got to go.”

Rice has potential to be new Steven Gerrard

Liverpool are thought to be favourites to land Rice at the end of the season.

The Reds have not enjoyed the best of starts to 2022-2023. But there is every reason to suggest they will be there or thereabouts come May.

Jurgen Klopp has been tipped to add new faces to his squad next summer. And Rice may well be the German’s top target.

Labelled as a defensive midfielder during his career to date, Murphy feels there is much more to Rice than just stopping the opposition.

“The interesting thing about Declan, I’ve been speaking to him recently and people will disagree,” he added.

“But I think, and I know he’d like this more, he could be a really devastating box-to-box player and get goals.

“I think he could get double figures in goals, imagine him in a City side with Rodri behind him then him and De Bruyne for example.”

Whether or not Liverpool do go for Rice only time will tell. Much will depend on whether they are able to entice Jude Bellingham to Anfield.

Rice’s England team-mate is known to be a Klopp favourite. The Borussia Dortmund man has been likened to Reds legend Steven Gerard.

And Murphy sees no reason why Rice’s career should not develop in the same way.
