Virgin Atlantic has announced a special, one-off flight between London and New York to celebrate World Pride in June, 2019.

It's the first time World Pride is being held in the United States, and coincides with the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a series of violent confrontations between the LGBTI community and authorities after a raid took place at the Stonewall gay bar in New York in 1969.

The flight is being billed as 'the gayest flight in the world' and all crew members will be part of the LGBTI community. They will be joined by special guest host Titus Burgess from the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Onboard entertainment will include drag queen performances, bingo, a Judy Garland sing-along and inter-seat speed dating.

Virgin, a company known for its not-so-conservative marketing campaigns, says it won't be holding back when flight takes off.

"We're not the type of company to mark an occasion like this half-heartedly and we're going to be pulling out all the stops to ensure the Pride Flight is delivered with a large serving of Virgin flair," says Mark Anderson from Virgin Atlantic.

World Pride is an event that allows members of LGBTI communities in countries where being gay is still illegal to travel and express their identity without the risk of prosecution.

New York authorities expect an influx of 3 million people for the event.

A portion of the ticket price, which is around NZ$600, will go to LGBTI charities.
