More than 1400 people have taken to social media and the GeoNet website to report an earthquake in the central North Island.

The magnitude 4.1 shake 50km south-east of Turangi happened at roughly 7:26pm on Saturday, and within 16 minutes over 1400 people had reported feeling it on the GeoNet site.

At a depth of 39km, GeoNet described the shake as "weak", but social media quickly came alive with people reporting the rumble.

"Ooooh, a good jolt there!" said one user, while another said they felt the quake in Taradale, Napier.

On Friday, GNS Science said quakes in the area could be linked to a slow-slip event happening off the east coast of the North Island.

A quake on Wednesday in Dannevirke also received a massive response online.
